WEBLOG, Web Date...

  • PICK : Quality Internet Resources in Library and Information Science has closed its doors. Web sites come and web sites go. The latter we rarely note. However, PICK is an exception, because it was exceptional. Created by the Thomas Parry Library, University of Wales Aberystwyth, it was one of the first and best library science sites. For years, to our knowledge, it was the only one that linked to collection development policies. Their home page currently says they are "undergoing major revision." Here's hoping we will see them soon again.

  • NewPages: Alternatives in Print & Media. Describing itself as a "Portal of Independents," this is an excellent reference resource for a variety of "independents," including literary periodicals, alternative periodicals, alternative newsweeklies, independent publishers, and independent bookstores. It also has a weblog and our personal favorite, a column from librarian "Uncle Frank". March's column is a delightful set of ruminations on librarians, bad press, our flight to high tech, and Pat Schroeder.

  • Almaktabah.com is our second verification resource for Arabic language materials. This is the online version of the bookstore in Beirut, Lebanon, which does business internationally, including with universities.

  • ketabook.com is our first resource for verification of books from Maghreb (i.e. Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia). According to their press release, they are the first online bookstore in the area. To quote them: "We realize the difficulties scholars and librarians around the world encounter when it comes to the acquisition of academic products from this part of the world. Ketabook.com has been designed to help you overcome these difficulties."

  • AcqWeb's Newsfeed has been sent to pasture. We returned from a trip today only to find the newsfeed news was still stuck three weeks back. To be specific, its latest was a March 4 story from BBC Sports (!) on Reuser brace stuns Bantams. (Wrong Brace and Bantams, guys.) We tweaked the code a bit, and it's back with more recent news, but the fact remains the load of this cool technology is too slow. One of the good things about AcqWeb is that it loads quickly, and we don't want to mess with that on a primary page. We also prefer the human filter to less-than-perfect search strings. We may not know much about British football, but we can tell in a flash it's not book publishing. For the full saga of this experiment, see also the AcqWeblogs of Feb. 18, Feb. 19, and Feb. 24.

  • Suite101.com: Librarians and Information Science is a first-rate entrance to the world of Web sites for librarians. It's edited by Gillian Davis, who offers a welcome Canadian perspective on the subject. Right now, for example, she has two articles on Canadian Librarianship. As well as articles, there are carefully selected and annotated lists of links and a "Top Five Web Sites" section. If the rest of Suite101's "Best-of-Web Directory" is half as good as this, it's quite a treasure trove. And it's in Dewey order.

  • record labels on the web.
Byline from AcqWeb Board Member and Bibliographer Rick Anderson: "Record Labels on the Web is an invaluable resource for anyone who wants to get in direct contact with a record label. With its regional and genre-driven search engines, it makes it easy to find labels located in particular geographical areas or (even better) dealing with particular types of music. Not every record label out there has a website, of course, but an awful lot of them do, and you may be surprised by how many small and obscure labels are represented here. In my roles as a critic and as editor of CD HotList, I use this service constantly."

  • UNESCO Libraries Portal. A useful general resource, handsomely designed and well worth a bookmark, its aim is "to enhance access to information related to library resources available on the World Wide Web as well as to issues affecting librarianship." The home page is multilingual, including a very navigable set of menus, plus a featured site, news and quote of the week. Thanks to Joie Springer, Richard Cadiou and Tina Greggila-Jouini for developing this site.
