AcqWeb is a World Wide Web site providing links to information and resources of interest to librarians with acquisitions or collection development responsibilities. The scope is international. Sites linked to include, but are not limited to:
AcqWeb began in 1994 as Ms. Acquisitions, and changed names in 1995, when it became affiliated with ACQNET, the electronic newsletter for Acquisitions librarians. The editor is Paul Orkiszewski (Acquisitions Librarian, Appalachian State University), and Associate Editors are: David Marshall (Head of Acquisitions and Serials, Georgetown University Library) and Peter Scott (Manager, Small Systems, University of Saskatchewan Libraries). Assistant editors include: Peter Brading (Assistant Librarian, University of Bristol Library), Steve Johnson (Assistant Acquisitions Librarian, Clemson University), and Alice Pidgeon (Head of Technical Services, Pace University School of Law Library). In addition, ACQNET's Editorial Board serves as an Advisory Board to AcqWeb. Members include: Eleanor Cook, editor (Serials Librarian, Appalachian State University Library); The Chief Editor is Eleanor Cook (Serials Coordinator, Appalachian State University Library), assisted by the following editorial board: Rick Anderson (Director of Resource Acquisition, University of Nevada-Reno); Marla Chesler (Collection Development Librarian, Northeastern University); Thelma Diercks (Head, Acquisitions Dept., University of Hawaii at Manoa); Deborah Duke (Collection Management Administrator, Fort Worth (TX) Public Library); Lisa German, (Head of Acquisitions, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign); Jack Montgomery (Coordinator, Collection Services, Western Kentucky University); Paul Orkiszewski (Acquisitions Coordinator, Appalachian State University); Keith Powell (Marketing Representative, Ambassador Book Service); Susan Scheiberg (Assistant Director, Library, RAND Corporation) The editor reserves the right to make all decisions regarding content, links and descriptions included in all AcqWeb documents and files. Suggestions are welcome. However, the editor has final say on what is included. Linking to a site is not to be construed as an endorsement, and similarly not linking to a site is not to be construed as the reverse.
VENDORSVendors and jobbers included on AcqWeb's publisher and vendor pages do business with and are set up to accommodate the special needs of libraries. Thus, book stores are not typically included.
PUBLISHERSAcqWeb links to publishers whose publications are used by libraries. It does not link to sites not deemed part of the publishing community used by libraries. Also, it does not typically link to publishers of only one or two publications.Subject classification and descriptions of publishers are also the purview of the editor. Due to the structure of the database, at this time, no publisher is linked under more than two subjects. The editor appreciates suggestions from a publisher on language to be used in a brief description of their operation, but again reserves the right to make a final decision. Promotional language to describe a site is not used nor are long descriptions. Many publishers have multiple listings (typically a gopher and a Web site, or two Web addresses). This is because it is often difficult to determine which link is stronger. Also, we do this in hopes that if one link is not working, another link will be. A related problem is "link rot." All links have been verified and double checked at the time they were added. However, the nature of the Web is that sites come, go and move. We do review as time permits, but cannot guarantee that all will work. In the meanwhile, users are encouraged to notify the editors if they spot sites that have permanently changed.
